When Raavan came crashing down in school!

A giant effigy of Raavan went up in flames on October 20 when the school celebrated Dussehra. Within minutes, the cheering turned louder when the blazing effigy came crashing down in the school campus. The sound and dazzle of crackers permeated the school atmosphere as the effigy burnt into ashes.

The effigy burning (also called Raavan Dahan)  that signifies ‘victory of good over evil’, was the signature event of the daylong Dussehra celebration. It was the students who built the bright and colourful Ravana effigy, and they only set it afire.

Festivals are the ‘heart’ of the Indian socio-cultural milieu. They have attached to them a history and tradition that dates back to centuries. Dussehra is one such very significant festival of India.

On the occasion, the students of classes 6^th to 12^th enacted a ‘Ram-Leela’ showcasing the story of the epic ‘Ramayana’, in the school’s playground. The participating students presented different events of Hindu deity Lord Rama’s life. The students were dressed in costumes depicting various characters like Lord Rama, Hanuman, Lakshman, Raavan, Vaanar-Sena etc. The whole school caught on to the festive fervour and participated zealously in celebrating the festival.

Class activities like ‘Diya-making’, ‘Card-making’ etc were also conducted to mark the onset of the festive season ahead.

While burning the effigies, children were asked to burn the evil within them, and thus follow the path of truth and righteousness, bearing in mind the fate of scholarly Raavan, who despite all his might and majesty was destroyed for his evil ways.
