Biranche Tandon, IIT BHU and winner Commonwealth Scholarship for PhD at Manchester University, remembers the school

“School”, regarded as a child’s second home, plays an important role in shaping their future. Starting from the basic knowledge shared in classrooms to the principles that build a great character, and eventually a great individual, this second home has a humongous task of fulfilling the dreams of the children and their families. Today, I am proud to have been a part of The Modern School for more than 12 years for I believe that it was the perfect place for me.

A beautiful journey, a great learning experience and a way to living was on offer at the abode of knowledge, skills and VALUES. Learning without cramming; excellence without distress; discipline without fear; and relationships without conditions; these were the principles always emphasized by Kapoor sir. It is now that I realise that his teachings have stayed with me till date and played a crucial role in shaping me into a great person. This was the place and time where we learned the true meaning of words like friendship, relationship, respect, discipline and dedication. The school was not merely a class room based knowledge delivery place but was much more than that, the competitive spirit was not only limited to the grades one earned; inter house competitions, be it dance, sports, choreography, debate or any other extracurricular, we were always motivated to be a part of as many things as we could manage.

All teachers were like my guardians (some were even closer). There support, love, guidance and motivation kept me going in the hardest times (these times were real tough and now, I see that all my teachers are like my parents, they have the biggest heart and forgive you for your wrong doings but only after you realise your fault). One teacher who was present all these years and made sure that I was on the right path was Meena ma’am. She was like my father who would scold me, beat me at times (not literally) but won’t compromise for my future. She was always there for me and her presence made me feel at home.

My journey ended at intermediate level but the memories of friends and, most importantly, the teachers stayed thereafter. Courage (or the ability to take risks and face challenges) and self confidence helped to move on to clear one of toughest Engineering entrance examination (now the classroom knowledge was of great help 😉 ). I got admitted to Indian Institute of Technology – Banaras Hindu University and co higher education. mpleted by Bachelors and Masters in Engineering (in the field of bio engineering and biomedical technology). My interest in the field grew and motivated me to pursueI see research as an opportunity to contribute towards the society through the knowledge and skills that I have learned.

Currently, I am a Ph. D. Student at The University of Manchester, United Kingdom and I have been awarded the Commonwealth scholarship. I have always been actively involved in sports and extra-curricular. I love to play all kinds of sports and recently, I have also developed a love for cooking. I love to meet and talk to new people and will be more than willing to help.
