Why Modern

Why Modern

Children learn best
when they feel safe.

Not safe as in locked gates and cameras — though we have those too. Safe as in unafraid. Unafraid to ask, to try, to be wrong, to be themselves. We built the whole school around that one idea.

The idea

Where affection replaces fear.

Our founder took this from the philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti: fear cripples intelligence; where there is love and affection, there is no fear. For 45 years, that one sentence has shaped how we teach, how we speak to children, and how we design a classroom.

In practice it means a child can put up their hand and be wrong without a flicker of embarrassment. It means discipline that is calm and predictable, never sudden or loud. It means a teacher who knows your child by name, by temperament, and by what makes them light up.

What makes us different

Four things we refuse to compromise.

01
Emotional safety, by design
Not a poster on the wall. It is built into systems — class agreements written with students, reflection instead of public correction, teachers trained in emotional intelligence.
02
Joy is the teacher
Curiosity outperforms compliance. Lessons begin with a real question, not a textbook page. Children who enjoy learning keep doing it long after the exam.
03
Rooted for 45 years, evolving every year
A multigenerational school built on trust — and the first and only IB World School in Lucknow. Heritage and innovation, not one or the other.
04
Building lifelong learners
We prepare children for a world we cannot predict: inquiry, self-direction, the confidence to keep learning when no one is grading them.
Where it began

Know Thyself.

Shri Rakesh Kapoor founded Modern School in 1979, drawing on the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti and his own studies at Teachers College, Columbia University. He gave the school its motto — Know Thyself — and its conviction that self-knowledge, mindfulness, and emotional intelligence matter as much as marks.

Under his leadership Modern became the first ISO-certified school in India and the first IB World School in Lucknow. He wrote books on mindfulness and the mind. The values he set in 1979 still run the school today.

“When the mind gets disintegrated between what is and what should be, unhappiness is caused. We must love ourselves and not allow the mind to disintegrate.”
Shri Rakesh Kapoor · Founder, 1951–2021
From the Director
“Fear cripples intelligence. Where there is love, affection, there is no fear.”

We hold these words by Krishnamurti close. For 45 years we have tried to build a place where every child feels supported, valued, and fearless — where mistakes are not setbacks but the way learning actually happens.

We invite you to join us in creating a learning environment where every child feels loved, valued, and unafraid to dream big.

From the Principal

Mentally and emotionally courageous.

We treat parents and grandparents as partners in education. By keeping the environment psychologically safe, empathetic, and transparent, we help children grow brave. Four principles guide every classroom:

Learning without cramming
Excellence without distress
Discipline without fear
Relationships of mutual regard
